Morocco’s APM Terminals (APMT) MedPort Tangier is set to receive the first three of twelve remote controlled ship-to-shore (STS) cranes it has ordered.

The super post-Panamax cranes, manufactured by ZPMC in Shanghai, have departed China and are set to arrive on February 15th in Morocco.

The new cranes will be able to accommodate 20,000 teu vessels and will give the facility an annual container throughput capacity of 5m teu.

APMT MedPort Tangier managing director, Dennis Olesen, said: “Our goal is to use proven technology to create high productivity for our clients on one of the world’s most strategically important trade lanes on the Strait of Gibraltar.”

The new deep-water terminal at the Tanger-Med II port complex is scheduled to begin operations in 2019 and will be equipped with both conventional and fully-automated machinery as well as an automated truck gate system.

The STS cranes being delivered will be fully automated and will be controlled by a remote crane operator located in an office near the quay.
