Chile’s Puerto Coronel will add two new container gantry cranes in 2019, aiming to go from moving 85 to 120 containers per hour.

The US$30m will cover the cost of the ZPMC cranes, which will be able to serve super post-Panamax ships, as well as the construction of associated infrastructure.

The cranes have a range of 65 m, equivalent to 23 rows of containers, a load capacity under spreader of 65 tonnes and load under hook of 75 tonnes, besides a load height on rails of 50 m.

The company’s CEO Javier Anwandter said: “The infrastructure we have today is sufficient for current and short-term demand.

“But we are committed to growing with a vision for the future and being prepared for the transformations in the shipping market, and the best prospects of foreign trade.”

Puerto Coronel is located in the second urban and industrial center of the country, 500 km south of the national capital, Santiago.

In 2017, the port transferred 6.97m tonnes, mainly from forestry and fishing products, which are the productive base of the region.

For this year, it has projected to increase its transfers by 8% and reach 7.4m tonnes, ranking behind the terminals of the central zone of the country, San Antonio and Valparaiso.
